Prompt: Blogger reflection of your experience with creating your social justice spreads (500 words). Write at least 1 page
My social justice is about the Israel and Palestine conflict, in which I am addressing the genocide that is taking place in the last 75 years or so. I chose to do this as my social justice in order to show how big of a deal that conflict really is and my goal is to educate others about it. Through making these process, I myself also learned a lot about this social justice issues along the way of designing my social justice spread. I think it came out fine although it might still need a lot of work and a lot of sophistication on my part of designing it. But here is the process and the step that I took in order to make this design on Adobe InDesign:
On my first spreadsheet I talked a "BRIEF HISTORY" about my design. But it is more like a Brief History about Israel and Palestine. I copy/paste a old yellowish paper and sized and aligned it to my background. I then got download and import Masjid Al Aqsa picture in Adobe Photoshop in order to mask the image and turn it into a circular picture. The reason I chose Masjid Al Aqsa is because it is a famous site in Israel/Palestine. It is located in Jerusalem in Israel/Palestine. For some context, Masjid Al Aqsa as well as Jerusalem is the third holiest site in Islam because Prophet Muhammad ascended into heaven by angel Gabriel. Where he elevated all the seven levels of heaven and met all the prophets such as Moses, Abraham, Adam and others. He also witnessed hell and the inmates in hell. After his trip to heaven and hell, he returned to Earth while continuing to spread the message of Islam. Due to the context that is being expressed as Masjid Al Aqsa or the Dome of the Rock being the holiest site, I strongly believe that this spread and provides an important message in the beginning of my design so this is why I chose to use Masjid Al Aqsa. I masked the image and export it to Adobe InDesign. Where I aligned the image in the middle of the spreadsheet. Afterwards, I named the title A BRIEF HISTORY with Kinto Sans font. As a a matter of fact, I used that font throughout my design for some heads-up. On the left side of the spreadsheet, I titled Palestine and the right side I titled Israel. Then I gave a brief information of what is Palestine and what is Israel. I then copy/paste both image of one person holding a Palestine flag and another person holding a Israel flag. I then aligned them together and put it on the bottom of the page to make it sense as they are standing on a land.
In my second spreadsheet, I mainly focused on the controversy and history of the conflict through newspapers and maps. On the left side of the spreadsheet, it was a inspiration of one of the design that I saw in the Cooper Hewitt museum. I used multiple newspaper from different sources and covered the left side of the spreadsheet with it. Then I titled "HISTORY" but made the titled very faded. Afterwards, I got a blood splattered picture from the Internet and put it onto the left side of the spreadsheet. I used transparency to make the newspaper visible while making it looked like dried blood to indicate the bloodshed that took place through 75 years. On the right side of the spreadsheet, I designed maps to show territorial changes to show the timeline on how the land got changed over time from 1897-present day, but on the last box of the the territorial change, I creates a mystery to show a curiosity and wonders on how the land will change in 2024 and beyond. Afterwards, I used old yellowish paper and used transparency to create a theme of history and how long this have been going on. I then used splattered blood behind the data and blend with the old yellowish paper to continue to show the bloodshed taking place due to this conflict.
On my last and final spreadsheet, on the left side of the spreadsheet, I showed data visualization where the casualties' taking place. The blood that is leaking from the top is Palestine and the blood that is leaking from the bottom is Israel I put the country and the background the the destroyed cities. On the right side of the spreadsheet, I implied on what could be next. On the center, I put old yellowish paper again to indicate the newspaper. The title is WHAT"S NEXT, underneath the title is the picture of the destroyed city. Underneath the picture is a subtitle for "Hopes and future for 2024 and beyond". Underneath that I talked about prophecies and hopes of the end of this conflict. On the background, I showed stonewalls to represent the border. And on front of the newspaper, I put the protest of both Israel and Palestine.
Overall, this is my design. It's a pretty solid one. If I had to rate my own design, I would give it a 8.5/10.
